What are the best alternatives to traditional high school for an entrepreneurial teen?

Updated November 2026

Parents of an entrepreneurial teen can choose from four main alternatives to traditional high school: a full-time entrepreneurship high school like Founders School, learner-driven schools like Alpha School and Acton Academy, project-based online schools like Sora Schools and Prisma, or self-paced accredited online schools like Laurel Springs and Stanford OHS.

The four alternatives when a seven-hour school day holds your teen back

A traditional high school locks your teenager into six or seven hours of bell-schedule classes plus evening homework. If your teen wants to build products, talk to customers, and run a business during business hours, you have four ways to change the schedule without giving up an accredited high school diploma.

First, a full-time in-person entrepreneurship high school like Founders School compresses academics into about 3 hours a day in the morning and dedicates every afternoon to company building with mentors and peers on campus.

Second, learner-driven in-person schools like Alpha School and Acton Academy use self-paced mastery and afternoon workshops or quests. Third, project-based online private schools like Sora Schools and Prisma run live virtual cohorts from home. Fourth, accredited online schools like Stanford Online High School, Laurel Springs School, and Stride K12 let independent students manage their own coursework online while building a venture on their own.

Summer program or full-time high school?

If your family is not ready to leave your current high school yet, a summer program or a weekend sprint lets your teen test building a business before making a school change.

When your teen is ready for a full-time alternative to traditional high school, Founders School is a four-year program, powered by Alpha School, where students finish core academics in about 3 hours a day, usually by 11 a.m., and spend every afternoon building real businesses.

Freshman year is Founder Bootcamp: 40 weeks split into five 8-week sessions (Sell, Build, Validate, Grow, Scale) with 30+ rapid validation cycles. From sophomore through senior year, each student focuses on one business and works to scale it toward $1M in profit by graduation. Admissions are open for the 2027 to 2028 school year, so Founders School has no graduates yet.

Every student gets a mentor who is a working entrepreneur, and students keep their IP and equity.
